Derawan Islands: Diving Haven at the Tip of Kalimantan

Derawan is a tropical paradise located in Berau, East Kalimantan, not far from the border of Malaysia. Derawan island became a marine destination for those who love the beach with soft white sand and crystal clear water. Moreover, we may see the turtles swimming merrily when we dive.

While sitting on the end of a wooden bridge that leads to the sea, sometimes we may see the green turtles roamed the surface of the water. Occasionally even the turtles that seem to roam around the cottage on the coast of the island. When the night comes, several turtles climbed ashore and lay their eggs.

Dr. Carden Wallace of the Museum of Tropical Queensland, Australia has examined Derawan Island marine wealth and found more than 50 types of Arcropora in single coral reef. Derawan are ranked third in the world as an international dive destination.

The island is relatively less well-known especially in the country, due to transport limitations to reach it. You must go to Balikpapan from Jakarta, Surabaya, Yogyakarta or Denpasar first. Flight takes about two hours from Jakarta to Balikpapan.

From Balikpapan, you still have to fly to Tanjung Redeb for an hour with a small plane that served by KAL Star, Deraya or DAS. In addition, Tanjung Redeb can also be reached by sea, by boat from Samarinda or Tarakan to Tanjung Redeb, followed by rented motorboat to the island Derawan with long travel about two hours.

Many international tourists who just got off the plane at the airport Kalimarau, Tanjung Redeb, rushed to the island Derawan by motorboat which was moored at a specific port.

Despite the remote location, many international tourists who already know more about the existence of this exotic island than local. Many Japanese travelers from Tokyo flew directly to Singapore or Sabah, went on the trip to Balikpapan then to Tanjung Redeb using small aircraft.

They spend their time while in Derawan with diving, enjoy the underwater beauty. Moreover, the pristine condition of the island adds to the charm anyone, and enjoy it as long as possible.

You can rent a snorkel for $3 per day. You can find fish such as barracuda, grouper, red fish, kurisi, sea urchins, and clams. On the rocks at a depth of ten meters, there is a reef known as "Trigger Blue Wall", with a length of 60 feet. There is a lot of red-toothed trigger fishes.

Derawan provide cottages, diving equipment rent and also restaurants. There are also a cheap lodges run by locals.

You also can go to the other islands located around Derawan. For example: Maratua, Sangalaki, and Kakaban Island. Sangalaki Island is where the Manta Rays population. Kakaban Island have a prehistoric lake not far from the shoreline.
